Nonprofit Org. U.S. Postage PAID WallaWalla, WA Permit No. 44 CARSON VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER 1107 U.S. Highway 395 N. Gardnerville, NV 89410 Winter 2023 In March 2020, Ozzie wanted to see his friends after work in case the looming pandemic shut down his school. They went driving in the snow and ended up sledding on a hill late at night. Ozzie opted out of sledding and fell on loose gravel while walking back down the hill, dislocating his knee and tearing 90% of the ligaments. He expected a six-week recovery from having his dislocated knee set back into place. Instead, his injury required two surgeries, three months of bed rest and nearly a year of rehabilitation at Carson Valley Medical Center. Feeling lost Ozzie went from being a healthy high school senior—working a part-time job, pursuing a passion for acting, enjoying his friends and preparing to graduate—to becoming bedridden. And the pandemic meant that he couldn’t leave the house, except for medical appointments. TAKE A LOOK cvmchospital.org LIKE US facebook.com/cvmchospital Social icon Circle Only use blue and/or white. So, when this whole thing happened, it was kind of the climax of being lost and just not knowing what was next. So then, obviously, I did all the rehab, and I didn’t get to see my friends.” Finding new purpose For months on end the only people Ozzie saw, outside of his family, were the staff at the CVMC Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy Center. His therapists began teaching him how to do his rehab exercises on his own, and by the end of his treatment, he was offered a job assisting at the center. Ozzie found a purpose and a community through his injury that changed the trajectory of his life for the better. He is currently studying to get an associate degree and will ultimately attend physical therapy school. “I’ve been told that these appointments are what people look forward to,” Ozzie says. “That’s just super incredible, because I’ve also been there in that position of having my sessions at the rehaab center be the only thing I have to look forward to. It’s really cool to be able to do that for other people. That’s incredible. That’s the most fulfilling part of the job.” Howmay we help you? 2 Carson Valley Medical Center • Winter 2023 AroundCVMC More surgical options, close to home Carson Valley Medical Center proudly announces robotic-assisted procedures using the da Vinci surgical system. The da Vinci surgical system further advances the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. It enables efficient access throughout the abdomen or chest, while the surgeon is 100% in control. The roboticassisted system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, more precise movements via tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. Robotic-assisted surgery is used in specialty areas such as gynecologic, urologic, thoracic and general surgery. Benefits include: ➜ Surgeon control. ➜ Precise movements. ➜ 3D and high-definition vision. ➜ Shorter hospital stay. ➜ Less recuperation time. ➜ Fewer complications. “Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery is the accepted standard of care for many specialties in more populated areas,” says Randall McElreath, RN, PhD, director of perioperative services for CVMC. “Now our Carson Valley patients have more opportunities to choose CVMC for their surgery.” For more information about CVMC surgical services, visit cvmchospital.org/services/surgical-services. cvmchospital.org 3 Comprehensive care 5 facts to know about heart failure If you are at risk for heart failure, you might be overwhelmed with information. Here are five simple facts to help you understand the basics. 1Heart failure is common. About 6.2 million adults in the United States have heart failure. By 2030, that number is expected to be 8 million adults. If you have experienced heart failure, you are not alone. 2Blood tests can be used to diagnose and monitor heart failure. Your primary care provider (PCP) may ask about your medical and family health history during your physical exam. If heart failure is suspected, a brain natriuretic peptide test may be ordered. This blood test measures the levels of hormones that are released in your blood if the heart is damaged. You may then be referred to a cardiologist for further testing, depending on the results. 3Heart failure symptoms change over time. These are some of the common symptoms, which may not be noticeable at first but worsen over time: ➜ Shortness of breath while active, at rest or lying down. ➜ Weight gain with swelling in the legs and stomach. ➜ Feeling tired and weak. ➜ Coughing or wheezing that persists. Heart failure can also slowly develop from chronic medical conditions, such as: ➜ Irregular heartbeat. ➜ Coronary artery disease. ➜ Diabetes. ➜ High blood pressure. ➜ Severe lung diseases. ➜ Obesity. Heart failure can also occur suddenly, following a heart attack or other event. 4Treatments for heart failure are effective. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing sodium intake and getting daily exercise, can help manage symptoms. A treatment plan can include medications, medical devices and surgeries. 5Healthy choices can prevent or delay heart failure. Keep your heart healthy by: ➜ Eating healthy foods. ➜ Exercising daily. ➜ Reducing your daily stress. ➜ Avoiding nicotine and alcohol. Work with your PCP to manage health conditions if you are at risk for heart failure.
