Gardnerville, NV 89410 CARSON VALLEY HEALTHY AT CARSON VALLEY HEALTH Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy, our skilled team treats patients with a wide range of conditions—such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, balance disorders, orthopedic conditions and neurological disorders—to help them reach maximum independence and mobility. Our goal is to restore their quality of life to the best level possible. At times, recovery can involve multiple specialists on our team working together to help our patients reach their goals. At Carson Valley Health, continuity of care is our specialty. Extreme sports turn to extreme injuries In 2020, then 19-year-old Douglas County resident Jayden Foster was involved in a dirt biking accident while camping in Fallon, Nevada. With the help of his quick-thinking friends, Jayden was rushed to the trauma center in Reno, Nevada, where he was in a coma for four weeks. The accident resulted in 11 facial fractures, a compressed spine and a TBI. Jayden spent six weeks fading in and out of consciousness while also battling COVID-19. “It was definitely a harsh reality waking up and the diagnosis was that I was supposed to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life,” Jayden says. “I did my first steps at Renown because one of the nurses was super encouraging to my mother, trying to give her a sense of ‘hey, don’t give up, let’s get him walking and see if he can do this’.” After his hospital stay, he was transferred to a TBI specialty facility in Colorado, where he spent seven weeks undergoing physical and speech therapy. When he returned home to Gardnerville, Jayden and his family looked for local rehabilitation programs, which led them to Carson Valley Health. Three types of therapy Jayden began his journey at CVH with occupational therapy. His therapist, Claudia, knew that aquatic therapy would be beneficial for him. Working in the water helped Jayden focus on technique and muscle strength while also regaining his sense of balance and stability. Rehab powers successful recovery

Jayden says Claudia encouraged him to keep working and never give up. “Claudia was always showing up with a smile on her face,” Jayden says. “She just doesn’t treat it like a job, she treats you like friends and family. She was always trying to encourage me, which fit my personality, because I don’t say no unless it’s impossible.” With Claudia’s support, he completed aquatic therapy and passed his assessment to continue with physical and speech therapies. Cleared for the use of weights and other equipment, Jayden began working with Courtney, in physical therapy, to regain strength and balance out of the water. Jayden says Courtney had a shared understanding with him that helped not only in his physical recovery but in his mental recovery as well. Jayden also worked with speech and language pathologist Selah on memory, focus and impulsivity. Jayden aspired to go back to the University of Nevada, Reno, to study mechanical engineering, so Selah included problem-solving, sequencing and math-related processes in his custom treatment plan. Road to recovery Jayden’s doctors gave him a regimen to slowly return to work, school and everyday life. Part of that was to take a few classes to see if his memory could hold the information he was learning, which was a concern after his TBI. Two years after his accident, Jayden had returned to the University of Nevada, Reno, to finish his degree in mechanical engineering and had received a promotion at his job at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno. Jayden recognizes how far he has come since his injury and how much it has affected him. “The brain injury changed my personality to a sense of how I look at things, how I respond to things and how I treat others,” he says. “I don’t take little things for granted anymore.” What are TBIs? TBIs are serious injuries caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a penetrating injury. TBIs are a major cause of death and disability in America. Motor vehicle crashes, falls and assaults are all common ways for a TBI to occur. The Carson Valley Health swing bed program is for patients who no longer require acute care but need time to fully recover from illness, injury or surgery. The program allows patients to transition, or swing, from acute hospital care to rehabilitation and skilled nursing in a hospital setting. Patients receive care 24 hours a day until they return home safely. Rehab powers successful recovery —Continued from cover such as skiing and snowboarding, are also common causes for TBIs. TBIs often occur suddenly, but there are steps you can take to decrease your risk, such as wearing your seat belt in all motor vehicles and wearing the appropriate headgear during sports and other activities, such as biking or driving off-road vehicles. If you or a loved one has been in a serious accident or you suspect a mild TBI, or concussion, has occurred, seek medical help immediately. Around CVH The CVH Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Treatment at the center requires a provider referral. Around CVH New imaging equipment reduces patients’ wait times HERE AT CARSON VALLEY HEALTH, we know that it’s what is on the inside that counts most. That’s why we’ve been busy replacing our older imaging equipment with brand-new, state-of-the-art equipment, including two operating room “C-arm” machines, a portable X-ray, a CT machine, and ultrasound and mammography systems. Our new equipment will do more than provide a clear picture of your body for your healthcare team. It will also help cut down on wait times by letting us see more patients per day, because more advanced equipment takes less time to perform each procedure. Portable imaging equipment has also been updated, allowing first responders to bring potentially lifesaving equipment to the patient instead of needing to bring the patient to us. CVH is finalizing other major equipment purchases as well, including a new MRI, SPECT/CT and X-ray. CVH’s Imaging Department is at the center of our expansion plans. It will border the emergency and operating rooms as well as the patient floor, for faster access. When the new building opens in July 2024, all imaging equipment will be no more than five years old. “This is huge, not only for CVH, but for our community as a whole,” says Patty Smith, medical imaging manager. “We want to make sure our patients can stay in Carson Valley for their care, and we are committed to that end.” Since January 2023, we’ve updated another ultrasound system, two echocardiogram systems and an interventional radiology room with a live X-ray that allows our radiologists to perform interventions such as biopsies, kyphoplasties and port placements. THE DANGER: falls, stumbles, collisions—and potentially serious injuries. Phones down, heads up! Walk this way: Keep your focus on what’s in front of and around you. Stop walking and move to a safe place to check your phone, text or take calls. Skip the earbuds or turn down the volume to hear what’s going on around you. A HEADS-UP… ABOUT DISTRACTED WALKING It’s a modern-day problem. You’ve seen it, and you may have even done it a time or two— distracted walking with a smartphone. Talking on the phone. Listening to music. Sending texts.
