Carson Valley Health makes history CARSON VALLEY HEALTH achieved a monumental milestone for patient care and rural healthcare infrastructure: The facility has been officially designated a Level IV Trauma Center. This makes CVH the first critical access hospital in Nevada to earn this certification. The Level IV designation is granted after a rigorous assessment confirming that CVH is equipped to provide essential trauma support, stabilization and comprehensive medical services to injured patients 24 hours a day. Elevating rural emergency care Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and disability, particularly in rural regions where access to care is often delayed due to geographical limitations. As an essential access point for structured emergency response, CVH enhances patient survival odds by providing timely intervention within the critical “golden hour”—the first 60 minutes following a traumatic injury. As outlined in state trauma system standards, a Level IV center is required to maintain: —Continued on page 3 • 24-hour emergency coverage—continuous availability of an emergency department physician and trauma-trained nurses. • Rapid stabilization—the immediate ability to evaluate, stabilize, diagnose and initiate definitive care for trauma patients. • Transfer protocol—established protocols for the seamless and rapid transfer of patients who require more specialized, high-level services to a Level I, II or III center. • Trauma team activation—defined criteria for activating a dedicated trauma team upon arrival of severely injured patients. • Community contribution—mandated participation in community-wide injury prevention and trauma education programs. “This designation is the culmination of immense dedication and an ongoing commitment to meet the highest standards of trauma care,” says Jeff Prater, CEO of CVH. CVH emergency providers and nurses are vital to achieving a Level IV Trauma Center designation, as they are responsible for rapid assessment, stabilization and initiation of lifesaving interventions. CVH already partners with Battle Born Medevac, East Fork Fire District, Care Flight and other regional healthcare providers; however, the Level IV designation solidifies its role in Nevada’s trauma care network, filling a gap in rural emergency medical services. Joey Loehner, CEO of Rural Medevac Alliance, says, “Battle Born Medevac is excited to partner with Carson Valley Health in this monumental achievement. Having access to a local trauma center will allow for greatly reduced transport times to definitive care for both air and ground ambulances.” Research indicates that efficient transfers between facilities can be associated with a 31% reduction in mortality for severely injured patients, underscoring the improved outcomes this designation brings. Commitment to prevention and public health Beyond the emergency room, the Level IV designation mandates CVH’s participation in community education and injury prevention efforts. CVH will expand initiatives aimed at reducing preventable injuries and fatalities across Carson Valley, enhancing overall public health through targeted programs, such as fall prevention for elderly people. In addition, CVH’s participation in the statewide trauma registry ensures data-sharing and performance improvement for the entire trauma network. The Level IV designation is a testament to the clinical quality, continual training and resource investment CVH has made to ensure a coordinated, rapid response to all types of trauma incidents. CVH extends its gratitude to assemblymen Gregory Koening and Blayne Osborn and to Nevada Rural Hospital Partners for their support as well. Hannah Gulisano, APRN, Senior Care.
